If you are interested in adopting one of our Great Danes, please review the steps involved in our adoption process:

SWGDR will not adopt out a dog to a home with pets that are not altered, nor to a home that has the intent to breed the adopted dog.  A fenced yard is preferred.


  • You must be over the age of 21
  • Reside in the State of Florida
  • Animals already existing in your home must be altered
  • A fenced in yard is preferred
  • Fill out our adoption application and submit it for review
  • We will send you confirmation of receipt once we receive your application
  • Your application will start the review process
  • You will be contacted by one of our staff members, this process can take up to 2 weeks.  Please allow ample time for us to review your application
  • Your references will be checked
  • Adoptive Danes and/or Fostering will be discussed
  • A home check will be done by one of our volunteers
  • Once your application is completed (including a home check) you will be eligible to adopt and/or foster from SWGDR.
  • If there is not a dog available for you at the time your home check is completed your application will remain on file and you will be adoption ready when you find your perfect match.  All you would need to do at that time is send us an e-mail if we have not contacted you first and advise us you are interested in a particular dog.



*Adoption fees:

$300.00 for adult dogs
$500.00 for puppies (up to 1 1/2 years old)

*This fee is used to offset rescue and medical costs.

  • A legal adoption contract will be signed by both parties

Foster Requirements
*If you have adopted a Great Dane from a Florida rescue previously we would require the following information:
                   
  No new application needs to be filled out at this time
  Please provide your name at the time of adoption,
       What organization you adopted from,
                    The year you adopted the dane,
                    The Danes name, age and gender.
  We will contact the agency that processed your application

If you have not adopted or fostered a dog previously we would require the following:

  • You Must be over the age of 21
  • Live in Florida & reside within reasonable driving distance to our veterinarian in Nokomis, FL
  • All dogs in the home must be altered
  • Fill out our adoption application, check that you would like to foster and submit it for review
  • We will send you comfirmation of receipt once we receive your application
  • Your application will start the review process
  • You will be contacted by one of our staff members, this process can take up to 2 weeks.  Please allow ample time for us to review your application
  • Your references will be checked
  • A home check will be done by one of our volunteers
  • Danes that are available for fostering will be discussed and placed with you
  • SWGDR provides food & medical care for your dane during the foster period
  • You will need to provide monthly updates on your foster for us to update our website

  • Our home check process will be discussed with you

Please understand we go to great lengths to make sure our Great Danes are placed in proper homes.
